At The Speed of Fashion

Upon first glance, the Fashion world and Nascar may not seem like they have too much in common. However, the buzz and excitement behind the scenes of the Fashion D’Lux SS2016 Runway Show was almost as dizzying as watching stock cars blur past at 200 mph. A parade of models, photographers, volunteers, and media correspondents filled the lobby of the Nascar Hall of Fame on Saturday night- gearing up for the event. Before the show, guests circulated among the various vendor tables- which included: Potts Chocolate, Kendra Scott Jewelry, Reinvente Candles, Jason of Beverly Hills Jewelry, and Machicao Fragrance. There was also a selection of luxury items up for bid for a silent auction, including a beautiful mixed media painting from artist William Antonio; curated by the South End gallery. After a few moments to mix and mingle, MC’s for the evening- Hade Robinson and Danielle Trotta, reporter for NASCAR on FOX, graced the stage to kick off the show. Brands for the evening consisted of: Machicao, Sloan, Saks Off Fifth, Dillards, Zarankova, and Porsche Design. Machicao was first; the collection was romantic and feminine, and consisted mostly of women’s evening wear. Some stand out pieces were an orange, mermaid style evening gown with intricate beading, a 1920’s style sleeveless gown, made from black lace and gold underlay with beading and fringe tassels, and finally- a knee-length, tan brocade number-that may have looked like your typical cocktail dress, except for the plunging- below navel neckline. The daring cut juxtaposed to the subdued fabric created and interesting look. The Machicao collection was topped by an unexpected shift from women’s evening wear, to men’s swimwear and underwear. Up next was Sloan. A far cry from the flowing gowns and sleek updo’s of Machicao, the Sloan collection was bohemian, with a touch of urban. The model’s hair and make up was exaggerated and dramatic; with teased tresses and smokey eyes. There was an element of attitude and edge to the collection. The most eye catching pieces were a high waist, chevron skirt, a color-blocked, spaghetti strap blouse paired with a tangerine hued pencil skirt, and a thigh-length, cream colored tunic dress, with gold tasseled sleeves and hem. Sloan had a broad range collection- with pieces that could transition from day to night; and a great blend of casual and evening looks. Mostly subdued colors were used: blues, tans; but there were also pops of neon color that helped to bring character and flair. Porsche Designs was a stand out brand with a collection that seemed made for the fashionable man or woman on the go. The overall aesthetic was chic and contemporaryblending casual looks like motorcycle jackets and denim; with more polished pieces like sheath dresses and a collar-less woman’s trench coat. Porsche is also known for their accessories, so each model donned eyewear as well as carried some type of bag, clutch, or luggage. During the middle of the show, Danielle Trotta announced the start of the live auction, which consisted of 9 prizes, each seemingly better than the next. From designer handbags to trips for two to NY fashion week, and even a trip to Italy, this auction was offering plenty of incentive to give towards the cause of the night. All proceeds from the show were going to The Kyle Busch Foundation, a charitable organization that is ‘committed to empowering children, families and communities to overcome hardship by providing essential tools (financial, material and experiential) to allow them to live their best lives possible.’. As well as the ‘Bundle of Joy’ fund- a monetary award for in need families struggling with infertility. Fashion D’Lux put together a great show for an even greater cause. Owners Peter Carey and Joshua Anglero, are truly making their mark on Charlotte’s fashion scene. I look forward to seeing what else they have in store!
